When thinking about going to the gym, we usually consider going in baggy athletic shorts, an all purpose hoodie, and an oversized stained shirt from the 1980s. While spandex bright flourescent cheetah prints might have also been acceptable for an Olivia Newton John music video a couple of decades ago, there is no reason not to look like a million bucks when you’re carving your muscles.
Aside from rocking out a killer gym wardrobe, there are plenty of options for you to look good while accessorizing yourself. Here are some often overlooked pieces you might not think of when planning out your gym outfit:
Headphones
Not only do earbuds and headphones deliver your favorite music to pump up your workout, they are also an excellent way to cancel out undesirable noises from around the gym. Instead of using the standard earbuds that come with your iPhone or MP3 player, go out and find a pair that can act as your own custom jewelry at the gym. Brands like Skull Candy and YurBuds are designed with a creative flair with athletes in mind.
Headbands
A headband is the perfect accompaniment to a boring ponytail. You can find headbands at virtually any retailer, or you can convert an old shirt with an elastic band into a brand new piece of clothing.
Yoga Mats
According to WebMD, Yoga is a popular and extremely effective exercise program that increases flexibility, concentration, strenght, posture, and balance. When it comes to picking out different color mats at the sporting goods stores, you are usually left with two options: black and boring beige. By checking out websites like YogaMatic and Dormtique, you can upload photos and designs yourself for your mat or choose from already made designs.
Outerwear
During the cold months, there is nothing worse than leaving the gym all sweaty and then stepping outside. When you visit a major outdoor retailer like Dick’s or REI, black is the predominant color on sale because it retains heat so well. If you are looking for something with more personality, look into the Patagonia R2 jacket or the Mountain Hardware Monkey Woman fleece. They are made of soft materials, come in many colors, and feel like your are wearing a blanket (without the embarrassment of a Snuggie).
By design, gym equipment has to be practical. There is no reason you have to be boring while wearing it though. Just like when you are getting dressed for work, a party, or going to a club, you can make your gym wardrobe an extension of yourself.
